Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar died on Wednesday morning after the aircraft he was travelling in crash-landed in Maharashtra’s Baramati, according to official statements issued after the incident.
As per his 2024 Assembly election affidavit filed with the Election Commission, Pawar had declared total assets worth Rs 45.37 crore. This included movable assets valued at Rs 8.22 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 37.15 crore, comprising land and residential properties spread across Maharashtra.
His movable assets included fixed deposits, silver articles, shares, bonds, tractors, and investments in various financial instruments. Pawar had also declared ownership of two vehicles -- a Toyota Camry and a Honda CR-V. The affidavit listed liabilities amounting to Rs 21.39 crore.
The disclosure shows a steady rise in his wealth over the past five years.
Between 2019 and 2024, Pawar’s immovable assets increased by nearly Rs 10 crore, according to affidavit data. While some media reports have pegged his total wealth at around Rs 124 crore, those figures appear to include family assets or aggregated valuations.
The Election Commission affidavit places Pawar’s personal assets at Rs 45.37 crore, which remains the most recent official declaration. No updated affidavit has been filed since the 2024 elections, as no subsequent Assembly polls have been held.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), on January 28, confirmed the crash and said no one on board survived. According to the regulator, the aircraft was carrying Pawar, two other personnel and two crew members.
The aircraft was identified as a Learjet with registration number VT-SSK, a six- to eight-seater business jet. It had taken off from Mumbai at around 8.10 am, and Air Traffic Control was alerted to the crash at 9.12 am, officials said.
Following reports of the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is said to have spoken to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who reportedly cancelled his scheduled Konkan rally.
A multiple-term MLA from Baramati, Ajit Pawar was among the most influential figures in Maharashtra politics.
