During the transition from winter to spring, your hair faces shifting weather conditions, indoor heating, and varying humidity levels. These factors, coupled with the seasonal change, can cause dandruff and other hair-related problems. Right, and an effective, hair hygiene is, therefore, the mantra for a healthy mane. Regular cleansing, moisture retention, and targeted care play vital roles in preventing dandruff and maintaining good hair health.

Dermatologist and Trichologist Dr Gitika Sanodia Biyani from LH Hiranandani Hospital, Mumbai, sheds light on the common struggle faced during the winter-spring shift. "Seasonal dandruff is prevalent during colder months due to factors like dry indoor heating, humidity fluctuations, and inadequate hydration. However, maintaining scalp hygiene and adopting a few simple practices can effectively combat these challenges," says Dr Biyani.

She suggests these effective remedies to combat hair problems:

Keep your scalp hydrated: Combat dryness and flaking by using a light, hydrating shampoo containing ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Use lukewarm, not hot, water to prevent scalp dehydration.

Exfoliate your scalp: Use a mild exfoliating shampoo with salicylic acid or tea tree oil once or twice a week to eliminate dead skin cells. However, moderation is key. Frequent exfoliation may lead to adverse effects.

Maintain moisture, avoid dryness: Choose a hydrating conditioner enriched with ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, and jojoba oil. Apply it to the hair ends to avoid a greasy scalp while ensuring adequate moisture.

Include a scalp massage: Stimulate blood circulation and create a favourable environment for hair follicles with a gentle scalp massage. Use your fingertips in circular motions for a few minutes before washing your hair.

Watch your diet: The food you eat can effect your hair and scalp, as they too need proper nutrition. Include omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and E, and zinc containing foods. These nutrients promote healthy scalp and hair growth.

Keep stress levels in check: Dandruff is worsened by stress, and therefore stress reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise should be practiced.
