Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has batted for the use of digital public infrastructure (DPI) developed in India to support Africa's endeavours in infrastructure, health, and financial inclusion.
"Can we look at the information technology sector driving deeper technology penetration in Africa... a technology driven partnership to further strengthen ties between India and Africa," Goyal said, as he identified six sectors for greater collaboration, including mining, food processing and MSME.
Speaking at the India-Africa Business Conclave on August 21, Goyal batted for expanding cooperation between both sides to attract more investments and increased trade.
Goyal also called for doubling trade between India and Africa to $200 billion from the present $100 billion in the next seven years, targetting a growth rate of 10 percent per year.
India’s exports to Africa stood at $38.7 billion in 2022-23, rising by 27 percent compared to a year ago. Imports from Africa were down 10.4 percent in that year to $29.2 billion.
"India and Africa are very much aligned in our desires, ambitions and aspirations. We are striving for a better quality of life for the people of our countries, seeking greater investments to bring the fruits of increased trade, strengthen our economic profiles, and drive growth. To sum it all up, our efforts aim to enhance greater prosperity and a better quality of life for the people of India and Africa," Goyal added.
