Aadhaar-UAN linking: The no-nonsense way to get it done

One small mismatch can quietly block claims, transfers, and even passbook access. This is how to link Aadhaar to your UAN without going in circles.

  • Ensure EPFO profile matches Aadhaar for smooth linking
  • Employer approval is needed to complete Aadhaar linking
  • Linked Aadhaar speeds up EPFO claims and KYC updates

Most people don’t think about Aadhaar-UAN linking until something breaks. A job switch, an EPF transfer, or a withdrawal request gets stuck. The portal doesn’t explain much beyond a vague “KYC pending” message. Linking Aadhaar early removes one of the most common roadblocks in EPFO processes.

Check this first before you touch the portal

Make sure the name and date of birth in your EPFO profile match Aadhaar exactly. Not “close enough”. Not initials instead of full names. Even an extra space or missing middle name can stop verification later and leave you stuck in a pending loop.

Also confirm that your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is active. If the OTP doesn’t arrive, nothing else moves forward.

Step 1: Log in to the EPFO member portal Sign in using your UAN and password on the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal. If you’ve forgotten your password, reset it first. Don’t try to add Aadhaar while locked out or half-logged in.

Step 2: See if Aadhaar is already sitting there Open the KYC section and look for Aadhaar. If it shows as verified, stop. You’re already done. If it shows as pending, don’t delete and re-add it. That usually makes things worse.

Step 3: Add Aadhaar only if it’s missing If Aadhaar is not listed at all, choose Aadhaar under KYC, enter your number and your name exactly as it appears on Aadhaar, and save.

Step 4: Understand the employer approval bottleneck This is where most people get confused. In many cases, Aadhaar linking does not complete until your employer approves it from their EPFO login. If your status says pending for more than a day or two, contact HR or payroll and ask them to approve your Aadhaar KYC. Re-entering details repeatedly will not speed this up.

Step 5: Recheck until it says verified Log in after employer approval and confirm that Aadhaar now shows as verified. Until you see that word, EPFO services can still fail in the background.

If things don’t move, here’s why

A name mismatch is the most common reason. Fix the EPFO profile first, then retry Aadhaar linking. A pending status that won’t change is usually employer inaction, not a system glitch. OTP issues almost always trace back to an inactive Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

What changes once Aadhaar is linked

Claims move faster, passbook access works reliably, and KYC updates stop getting rejected without explanation. It doesn’t magically solve every EPFO issue, but it removes one of the biggest friction points.
