You type your PAN number. You type your Aadhaar number. You’re careful. You submit. And it shows “data mismatch.”
It’s the kind of message that makes you doubt yourself. Did I enter something wrong? Is my PAN invalid? Has something serious happened?
In most cases, nothing dramatic is wrong. The system is simply rigid. It doesn’t think. It compares fields. If even one character doesn’t match, it will not accept your input.
Sit down and compare the details like a proofreader
Don’t rely on what you think your details are. Open the actual records.
Log into your Aadhaar profile. Check your PAN details through the Income Tax portal. Then read both like you’re checking a spelling mistake in a legal document.
Is your full name identical? Not similar — identical.
If Aadhaar says “Priya Sharma” but PAN says “Priya R Sharma,” that’s enough to block linking.
If your Aadhaar shows only your birth year because you enrolled years ago without full proof, but your PAN shows the exact date, that can also create friction.
And if the date of birth itself is different — even by a single digit — the system will not allow linking under any circumstances.
Be clear about which document carries the mistake
This is where people get impatient and keep retrying the link instead of fixing the real issue.
Ask yourself: which one is actually correct?
If your Aadhaar has the wrong spelling or incomplete date of birth, that needs to be updated. If your PAN was issued with an error years ago and you never noticed, then PAN must be corrected.
There’s no shortcut around this step.
Updating Aadhaar feels tedious, but it’s manageable
If your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar, you can request certain changes online through UIDAI. For name or date-of-birth corrections, you’ll need proper supporting documents. In some cases, you may have to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
Once the update request is approved and reflected in the system, linking usually works on the next attempt.
Correcting PAN requires similar patience
PAN correction can be done online through authorised portals. You upload supporting documents, pay a small fee and wait for approval.
The key thing people miss is timing. Don’t try linking again immediately after submitting a correction request. Wait until the updated details are actually visible in the system.
What this really comes down to
Most “data mismatch” cases are not legal problems. They are old enrolment quirks, missing middle names, incomplete birth dates or spelling inconsistencies that went unnoticed for years.
It feels bureaucratic because it is bureaucratic. But it’s rarely complicated.
Once both documents carry exactly the same name, date of birth and gender, the linking process usually goes through without drama.
