Nusli Wadia, the Chairman of the Wadia Group, has filed a defamation suit against Tata Sons for allegedly hurting his reputation during the consideration of a proposal to remove him from the post of independent director.

Wadia was removed from his posts at Tata Steel, Tata Motors and Tata Chemicals in December 2016. In a complaint filed with a Mumbai court, Wadia said Tata Sons' allegations against him such as acting against the interests of the Tata Group; not conducting himself independently; galvanizing the other independent directors to act prejudicially, and acting in concert with the ex-chairman of Tata Group Cyrus Mistry, have hurt his reputation.

Wadia was a supporter of Cyrus Mistry, who was the sixth chairman of Tata Sons. Mistry had taken over as the chairman in 2012 after Ratan Tata announced his retirement.
