Electric scooters (e-scooters) are projected to make up one in every five scooters in India by FY26, backed by expanded distribution networks, new product launches, and the entry of major players like Honda with its electric Activa. Manufacturers are optimistic that e-scooter penetration could reach 20-25 percent of the total two-wheeler market, including both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric scooters, by FY26, according to a Business Standard report.
A senior executive from a leading electric two-wheeler company, cited in the report, mentioned that the industry is anticipating two possible growth scenarios. With an average monthly sales rate of 120,000 units, e-scooter sales could reach 1.5 million units by FY26. If the market grows at a faster pace, however, penetration could rise to 25 percent, with a monthly sales rate of 150,000 units, the report notes.
The rapid expansion of distribution networks, which now cover 60 percent of the two-wheeler market, bolsters this positive outlook. Additionally, the reduction in e-scooter prices, particularly with the introduction of new entry-level models, is expected to attract a wider customer base.
By the end of FY25, e-scooter penetration is expected to reach 13-15 percent, with VAHAN data showing that 0.79 million electric two-wheelers have already been registered in FY25, further states the report. Total sales for FY25 are projected to exceed 1 million units, with three months remaining.
