The Power Ministry seeks restrictions on the usage of coal in the country, reports CNBC-TV18.

Sources tell CNBC-TV18 that the Power Ministry wants only companies with allocated coal to be supplied power via power purchase agreements (PPAs), and that allocated coal not be used for merchant power sales.

This move is aimed at ensuring cheap coal is not used for profiteering and that coal be utilized for public consumption only.

The Power Min wrote to the Coal Ministry seeking these changes be made and to act on the issue.
