Assam coal miners trapped, forces continue rescue operations to save workers

Rescue operations continue in Assam after a coal mine in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso flooded, trapping miners. On Wednesday, authorities recovered the body of one miner as multiple agencies, including the Indian Army, Navy, Assam Rifles, NDRF, and SDRF, resumed their efforts. The incident, which occurred around 7 am on Monday at the Assam Coal Quarry in Dima Hasao district, is believed to have been triggered by the opening of an underground water channel. Around 30-35 people managed to escape, but 15-16 miners remain trapped inside. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been personally monitoring the situation, even while on a roadshow for the Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative in Mumbai and New Delhi. Despite the ongoing challenges, including about 100 feet of water inside the mine, rescue teams are working tirelessly. Nine trapped workers, including individuals from Assam, Nepal, and West Bengal, are still being searched for.
