Airtel's data center arm Nxtra has inked pacts with Ampln and Amplus Energy to procure an additional 140,208 MWh of renewable energy.
As per the agreement, AmpIn Energy and Amplus Energy will set up captive solar and wind power plants of 48 MWdc and 24.3 MW, respectively for Nxtra’s data centres in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha.
Ashish Arora, CEO — Nxtra by Airtel said the additional clean energy supply will increase its renewable energy share to approximately 70 percent in the overall energy mix for our core data centres.
The 25-year agreements are in line with Nxtra’s commitment to achieving its net-zero target of 2031 and further strengthen its credentials as India’s largest chain of green data centres in the country.
With this, Nxtra said that it has enhanced its existing commitment to reduce its carbon footprint through renewable energy sources annually by ~ 99,547 tCO2e.
This is in addition to Nxtra’s multiple other interventions to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its operations by 100 percent by FY2031.
"As we work towards building more capacity in coming years and gear up for Generative AI-powered loads, we are fully cognizant of our responsibility towards the environment and are prepared to mitigate the impact on climate," he said.
Nxtra by Airtel has 12 large and 120 edge data centres across the country. It previously said to invest over Rs 5000 crores over the next few years to build six new hyperscale data centres across key metro cities in India and expand its capacity by 2X to over 400 MW.
Nxtra’s revenue has grown at an average annual pace of around 13 percent over the past five years (from Rs 852 crore in FY19 to Rs 1,601 crore in FY23), driven by robust demand for its services, according to Care Ratings.
On February 14, Moneycontrol reported private equity firm Carlyle plans to sell its entire 24 percent stake in Nxtra Data Ltd.
