Tata Motors has introduced the 2023 edition of the Nexon in petrol, diesel and electric versions to strengthen its presence in the hyper-competitive compact sports utility vehicle market.

The petrol and diesel versions start at Rs 8.09 lakh and Rs 10.99 lakh, respectively. The battery-run variants will be available from Rs 14.7 lakh (mid-range) and Rs 18.19 lakh (long range). All prices are ex-showroom and introductory.

Once commercially available, the new Nexon will be pitted against Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and Mahindra XUV300 in the petrol/diesel segment and the Mahindra XUV400 in the EV segment.

The new Nexon comes in 11 variants: Creative, Creative+, Creative+ S, Fearless, Fearless S, Fearless+ S, Pure, Pure S, Smart, Smart+ and Smart+ S. It is available in six colours: Fearless Purple, Creative Ocean, Pure Grey, Flame Red, Daytona Grey, and Pristine White.

    Cementing its position

"With over 5 lakh vehicles sporting the Nexon nameplate running on Indian roads, its unique blend of mass appeal and aspirational tone is exceptional,” Shailesh Chandra, managing director of Tata Motors, Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said while launching the new editions of Nexon. “We are confident that this new avatar of the Nexon will appeal to a wider audience of customers, cement its position as India’s bestselling SUV and further enrich its legacy.”

The redesigned Nexon will be equipped with similar engine options as the outgoing model. It comes with a Revotron 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that delivers 120PS power and 170Nm torque, and a Revotorq 1.5-litre diesel engine that produces 115PS power and 260Nm torque.

The petrol variants get 5-speed manual transmission and 7-speed dual clutch automatic in addition to the existing 6-speed MT and 6-speed AMT options, while the diesel variant retains the 6-speed MT and 6-speed AMT options.

The major exterior upgrades include bi-functional LED headlamps with sequential LED DRLs, redesigned bumpers, connected LED taillamps, and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The company said the new Nexon is the first made-in-India and sold-in-India car to achieve Global NCAP's five-star crash test rating. The 2023 Nexon comes with six airbags, a 360-degree surround view system with front parking sensors, blind view monitor, electronic stability control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, auto headlamps with rain-sensing wipers, three-point seat belts for all seats, and front fog lamps with cornering function.

The sub-4 metre compact SUV segment is the largest in terms of volumes in the passenger vehicle market.

As Chandra put it, “In 2017, when we had launched this car, the market was 30,000 (units) a month with (the presence of) about seven to eight players. Today, every player has a product position in this segment, roughly 14 models now. And the volume has gone up to 90,000 plus (per month).”

Nexon sales reached 172,139 units in FY23 and 124,130 units in FY22.

“In the compact SUV (segment), we consider two products Punch and Nexon. And our market share hovers around 30 percent, plus minus two. We are the market leader in this space. We will be able to share our projected market share once we are able to discover incremental volumes (garnered) in the coming months,” added Chandra.

Tata Motors plans to set up a separate sales network for electric passenger vehicles in this financial year as it looks to offer a differentiated experience to buyers opting for the environment-friendly models.
