  • A digital detox is advised to reduce phone dependency and improve mental health
  • Reduce screen time with jigsaw puzzles, painting, and book clubs.
  • Keeping a garden journal shifts focus from screens to mindful hobbies.

Have you recently observed yourself spending even the tiniest sliver of your time on social media apps? Have you felt inebriated by the infinity scroll machine, and under its influence spent all your time and energy into it day in and day out? If your relationship with your phone is on the verge of becoming obsessive, and your screen time puts a damper on your spirits every time you chance upon it, a digital detox is advised.

While you may be trying to reduce your availability to your mobile, it isn’t as easy as it sounds to stay away from your phone for an extended period of time. It is necessary, though, as being on your phone affects not only your ocular, but your mental health as well.

To begin your digital detox start small. Set a daily screen limit (for example, 1-2 hours). You can also designate phone-free hours like during meals or before bedtime. This will help you gradually reduce your phone dependency and make it easier to try offline activities.

However, here are a few things you must try your hand at, that can peel you away from your phone, and bring you closer to your childhood self that actually had interests and hobbies.

Jigsaw Puzzles

Solving a jigsaw puzzle is a fun activity that you can do by yourself, or with a group of friends or your family. It is a great bonding exercise, and also keeps your mind away from the mobile, as you focus on reaching the goal of creating the visual by joining the pieces. Jigsaw puzzles may look like child’s play, however, they’re anything but.

Paint your Pillows

Even if you weren’t sent to summer classes for painting, it is always enjoyable to pick up a brush and create something you call your own. It doesn’t always have to be on a canvas, you may paint your T-shirts or your pillow covers, and add a personalised touch to home decor. A variety of options are available nowadays, where you can even paint by numbers on a canvas.

Not just Rubik’s Cube

Challenge yourself to different versions of the Rubik’s cube. If you feel like you’ve mastered the 3x3 version, it may be time to up your game by trying the 4x4 one, or even a mirror or a pyramid cube can be intellectually stimulating. It helps in keeping you away from unintentional scrolling.

Time for a Book Club

Follow in the footsteps of your favourite celebrities like Dua Lipa or Reese Witherspoon, and start your own book club with your friends. Meeting even once a fortnight or a month will give you something to look forward to, and keep you intrigued in the nuance of the novel, instead of your phone. Perhaps you and your members can have a themed book club as well.

Maintain a Garden Journal

Gardening is a simple yet powerful habit. Keeping a garden journal helps you grow better plants and enjoy gardening more. By writing down what you plant, when you water, and how each plant performs, you can learn from your successes and mistakes over time. A journal also lets you track weather patterns, pest problems, and blooming periods, making it easier to plan for the next season.
