Lucky bamboo is a popular indoor plant known for its striking, twisting stalks. According to Feng Shui, it brings good luck and keeps negative energy at bay. Thus, it is often gifted to loved ones on special occasions and kept in homes and offices. It enhances the appeal of any corner effortlessly, making it a popular choice.
While its name and appearance suggest it is a true bamboo, it is actually a tropical plant Dracaena sanderiana, which is fast-growing and impressive. Even though it is low-maintenance, some people struggle to keep it from dying. Here are a few tips and mistakes to avoid if you want a healthy growth…

One of the most common mistakes is causing root rot due to excess watering. If you’re growing it in a water vase, ensure the roots are fully covered and change the water every 7-10 days to avoid disease and smell. For soil-grown plants, ensure the top few inches dry out before watering again. Excess water deprives the roots of oxygen and makes the plant weak. When the moisture is right, your luck bamboo looks lush and beautiful.
This plant is perfect for warm Indian weather, with a suitable temperature ranging between 18°C and 30°C. Avoid placing the plant in rooms with heater or air conditioner, as sudden changes in temperature can cause stress and damage. When it comes to humidity, most are tolerant of average humidity.
Lucky bamboo does not need over fertilisation. Just 1-2 drops of mild liquid fertiliser in a month are enough for healthy growth. If you see red roots in a water vase, don’t panic, it’s a sign of a healthy plant. Avoid fertilising a stressed or yellowing plant. Consider fish emulsion or compost tea for gentler nutrient options.
Light also determines its growth. This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. It is best placed in a room with natural light and sheer curtains. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. While it may tolerate very little light, excess of it has the opposite effect. When the plant begins to look stressed or the leaves turn yellow or brown, provide more light.

Lucky bamboo does need occasional pruning for healthy growth. It’s best to cut off yellowing or damaged leaves. Avoid cutting the main stalk, instead, cut the off shoots and trim them back to about one or two inches from the main stem. This will encourage new, healthier growth.
