There’s a reason gardeners call petunias the “fireworks of the flower world”. These trumpet-shaped blooms add beauty to your space. However, they need a little thoughtful care to truly flourish. With just a bit of know-how, you can create a display that feels like a living tapestry of colour.
Petunias thrive in pots and hanging baskets, spilling colour over edges and railings in spectacular cascades. They’re not fussy about soil fertility, as long as it drains well and receives plenty of sun. But because container soil dries faster than garden earth, petunias call for attention — and that’s where good practice makes all the difference.
Containers also offer flexibility. You can mix upright and trailing varieties, plant complementary colours together, or create dramatic drapes of blossoms that catch the eye from every angle.

Petunias bloom best with at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Too little light can lead to lanky growth and fewer flowers, so place pots in the sunniest part of your balcony.
Balcony pots dry out fast, especially in warm weather. Water deeplywhen the top couple of centimetres of soil feels dry, ensuring excess water escapes through drainage holes. In hot spells, daily watering may be needed. But be careful: petunias don’t like soggy feet, and standing water can lead to root problems.

Petunias are heavy feeders. Because nutrients wash out of potting soil quickly, regular fertilising keeps blooms lush and colourful. Use a balanced liquid or slow-release fertiliser every couple of weeks during the growing season.
Deadheading, pinching off spent flowers, tells the plant to produce more blooms rather than set seed. Trim leggy stems lightly to encourage bushier growth and delay that droopy, tired look.
Choose the right pot: A medium-large container with good drainage lets roots spread and keeps soil healthy.
Improve the soil: Mix in compost or organic matter to boost nutrients and help with aeration.
Watch out for pests and diseases: Aphids, spider mites and slugs can nibble at leaves, neem oil or gentle sprays help control them organically.
Mulch lightly: A thin layer around the base helps conserve moisture and keeps roots comfy.
