  • Homemade remedies are effective and save money on store-bought cleaners

It is natural for your silver utensils to tarnish over time. They are most commonly used in kitchens and their frequent use makes them lose their shine and turn black. This mainly happens because silver reacts with sulphur present in the air, which leads to tarnishing.

While it is not possible to stop this, there are natural ways through which you can restore silver to its original state. Here are expert tips on cleaning your silver utensils with natural, homemade remedies that are effective and simple. These save you from buying expensive store-bought cleaners.

Try these 4 tips to keep your silver utensils shining naturally

Lemon and salt

Using lemon and salt is an effective way to clean silver utensils that have turned black. Lemon contains citric acid which breaks down tough stains and when combined with salt, it helps clean utensils. Cut a fresh lemon and squeeze the juice onto the vessels or jars. Sprinkle some salt and keep it for 20-30 minutes. Use a scrub to clean the surface and rinse thoroughly.

Aluminium foil and baking soda

This trick works beautifully for cleaning silver utensils. Line a deep ceramic or glassware bowl with aluminium foil with the shiny side facing out. Place the tarnished utensils in direct contact with the foil. Sprinkle 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda over the utensils and pour boiling water.

Within a few minutes, the tarnish vanishes, making it one of the most effective methods. Take out the utensils with a tong from the dish and place on a dry towel. Then rinse and dry.

White toothpaste

A commonly used method to clean your silver utensils is by applying a tiny amount of white toothpaste on a soft cloth and gently rubbing it on the silver, especially the black parts. This simple way is surprisingly effective. Once done, rinse with warm water and use a soft cloth to dry.
