Summer is the time when many spend indoor. Therefore summer decor need to be more comfortable. Swapping heavy fabrics for breezy linens, dark tones for soft neutrals, and clutter for cleanliness, creates a space that feels cooler, lighter, and easier to live in. When the temperature rise, your home needs to breathe. The right palette, pattern, and texture can shift the energy of a space from stifling to soothing. Breathable fabrics, earthen elements, and softened light, can all make a difference and turn your interiors into a cool place.

Summer light is strong, sometimes harsh, but when filtered right, it can become gentle and atmospheric, says Meghana Nimmagadda, Founder Principal Designer,  Designtales. She recommends sheer linen curtains, cotton chiks, and handwoven fabric panels that diffuse sunlight and cast delicate shadows. “Paired with chalky whites, celadon greens, or pale ochres, these elements bounce light around the room without glare. Using natural light as a mood booster rather than a spotlight creates interiors that feel lived in, loved, and perfectly seasonal,” says Nimmagadda.

Additionally, patterns and textiles also matter. “Instead of bold statements, go for fluid prints, leafy block florals, wave-like lines, or softened ikats in shades of charcoal, faded indigo, or dusted coral. These not only mirror nature but visually evoke water, breeze, and shade, three things you long for in summer,” she says.

Here are some small changes, suggested by Nimmagadda, that help calm your mood:

  • Let light in, gently: Use sheer curtains, chiks, or handwoven panels to soften sunlight and bring in a dappled glow that soothes both the eyes and mind.
  • Dial down the palette: Lime-washed neutrals, faded pastels, and mineral shades reflect heat while keeping the mood hushed and expansive.
  • Bring nature in print: Think block-printed florals, leaf silhouettes, or wavy lines in organic tones. These remind us of still waters, trees, and cooling breezes.

  • Choose breezy fabrics: Cotton, khadi, or linen in muted hues feel light on the skin and softer on the eye. Ideal for upholstery, cushions, and throws.
  • Ground with earthy details: Add terracotta pots, woven baskets, sea-glass vases, or handmade ceramics to introduce texture and a sense of slow, grounded calm.
