  • The wrong shoe theory promotes creative, mismatched footwear.
  • Bollywood stars like Sonam Kapoor embrace the playful shoe trend
  • Mixing formal and casual shoes adds personality to any outfit

For decades, fashion preached one rule that said, your shoes must match your outfit. But style is evolving, and the old logic is slowly fading. The wrong shoe theory, a playful, personality-packed idea that encourages deliberately mismatched footwear, has been around for sometime now.

The term was coined by stylist Allison Bornstein and soon embraced by fashion insiders and influencers. The wrong shoe theory reminds us that fashion is a tool for style communication that can be spoken in various ways. Its charm lies in creativity, self-expression, and the courage to choose what feels right, even if it doesn’t match. The trend encourages rethinking what you already own and letting creativity lead.

On social media, Bollywood celebrities are constantly challenging traditional style rules, showing that the wrong- shoe can sometimes be the most convincing choice. Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor often shares Instagram posts pairing elegant dresses with sporty sneakers or chunky boots. Her  sisters are also in on the trend.

Rhea Kapoor and Jahnvi Kapoor have been spotted styling kicks with different dresses, while Khushi Kapoor has rocked party heels with oversized cardigan. Beyond the Kapoor clan, stars like Suhana Khan have swapped heels for high-top sneakers, prioritising comfort without sacrificing style. Moreover, other actresses including Alia Bhatt, Anushka Sharma, Kareena Kapoor, and Priyanka Chopra have also embraced this playful wrong-shoe fashion on various occasions.

Check-out some simple ways to master the wrong shoe theory

The formal-casual match

Try to pair  formal outfits with casual footwear. You can wear a sharp blazer with trainers, for example. The mix of dress codes creates easy and effortless twist without making it look sloppy.

The proportion play

A summer dress with chunky combat boots, delicate ballet flats with baggy cargo pants, sneakers with a tailored suit, or rugged hiking boots with a silk slip dress.  Even if your shoes don’t match the expected style of the outfit, it does create interest and individuality.

Deliberate mix of seasons

Have you ever tried winter boots with floral, airy spring dresses, or summer slides with autumn outfits? Mixing seasons keeps your style unique, comfortable, and also playful.

Choose your colour

You don’t always have to perfectly match the colour tone of your outfit and your footwear. Your shoes can echo a small accent in your outfit, or maybe none at all. Brightly coloured footwear against a neutral dress can feel bold and beautiful.

Put comfort first

Wearing uncomfortable footwear just to match your outfit can do more harm than wearing comfortable shoes that express your own style. Comfort is confidence, that’s the new-age mantra.
