As winter fades and warmer days take over, it’s time to give your blankets, quilts, and heavy jackets the care they deserve before storing them away. Proper cleaning and thoughtful storage not only extend the life of these essentials but also ensure they feel fresh, hygienic, and ready to use when the next cold season returns. With a few practical habits, you can protect your winter investments from moisture, odour, and damage.
Never store winter textiles without cleaning them first. Even if they appear clean, blankets, quilts, and jackets collect sweat, body oils, dust, and invisible bacteria over months of use. These residues attract insects and can cause fabric breakdown over time.

Most cotton and microfiber blankets can be machine-washed using a gentle cycle and mild detergent. Woollen blankets and delicate quilts are best hand-washed in cold water or sent for professional cleaning. Always dry them completely — preferably under sunlight or in a well-ventilated space — before storing. Dampness, even in small amounts, can lead to mildew and unpleasant odours.
Winter jackets need individual attention. Puffer jackets usually require gentle washing and air-drying with occasional fluffing to maintain their shape. Structured coats, embellished pieces, or those with lining should ideally be dry-cleaned before being packed away.
Moisture is the biggest enemy of stored winterwear. Choose storage spaces that are cool, dry, and well-ventilated. Avoid placing winter essentials in damp basements or poorly ventilated cupboards. Use natural moisture absorbers such as silica gel sachets, charcoal pouches, or neem leaves inside storage boxes. Lavender sachets, cedar blocks, or dried bay leaves help keep moths away while leaving behind a subtle, pleasant fragrance. Avoid naphthalene balls, which leave strong chemical smells and are harmful in enclosed spaces.
Bulky winter items can take up more space than expected, but smart folding and packing can make a significant difference. Vacuum storage bags are ideal for blankets, quilts, and padded jackets, reducing their volume by more than half. However, avoid vacuum-packing natural fibres like wool for long periods, as they need airflow to retain their texture.
For regular storage, fold items neatly and place them inside breathable cotton storage bags or pillowcases rather than plastic covers. This allows air circulation while keeping dust at bay. Label boxes clearly so you can locate items easily when winter returns.
Leather needs special care to maintain its texture and finish. Before storing, gently wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Apply a leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking over time. Always store leather jackets on padded hangers to help them retain their shape and never fold leather for long periods. Keep them inside breathable garment bags and store them away from direct sunlight and humidity.

Fur jackets, whether natural or faux, require careful handling. For real fur, professional cleaning and cold storage are recommended if possible. At home, hang them on broad hangers and ensure there’s enough space around them to avoid crushing the fur. Keep them in cool, dark closets with good airflow. Faux fur jackets can usually be gently cleaned and air-dried. Brush them lightly before storage to restore softness. As with leather, avoid plastic garment covers — fabric garment bags are best.
