  • Modern style: chunky boots, graphic tees, minimalist accessories
  • Patterns add warmth, structure, and luxury to coats, blazers, skirts, and trousers.

From tailored coats to statement scarves, certain textiles instantly elevate an outfit and bring that unmistakable winter polish. Here are five heritage patterns that continue to define winter luxury, and how to style them with a modern edge.

Herringbone

Herringbone is the fabric equivalent of quiet confidence. Characterised by its subtle broken zig-zag weave, it is most often seen in wool and wool-blend tailoring. The appeal of herringbone lies in its ability to look rich without being loud. Long overcoats, structured blazers, tailored trousers and even waistcoats look particularly elevated in this pattern.

A herringbone coat layered over fine knit and straight trousers feels timeless. For a contemporary touch, pair it with chunky boots or minimalist sneakers. In softer shades like camel, grey or cream, herringbone also works beautifully for women’s oversized coatsand winter dresses, offering texture without overwhelming the silhouette.

Tweed

Few fabrics carry the weight of luxury history like tweed. Traditionally associated with countryside dressing, tweed has now been fully reimagined for urban wardrobes. Its rich, nubby texture and woven complexity make it ideal for garments that are meant to be noticed.

Cropped jackets, boxy blazers, midi skirts, co-ord sets and even tailored shorts look incredibly polished in tweed. Wear a tweed blazer over a graphic tee and relaxed denim, or pair a tweed skirt with a fine roll-neck and sleek boots. In jewel tones, pastels, or classic monochromes, tweed offers warmth, structure and instant couture energy.

Gingham

Gingham may be known for its light summer associations, but in winter, when executed in heavier fabrics like brushed cotton, flannel and wool blends, it becomes unexpectedly chic. Larger gingham checks in muted palettes like charcoal and cream, forest green and black, or burgundy and navy feel especially luxe.

Shirt dresses, oversized button-downs, relaxed trousers and winter co-ords in gingham strike a beautiful balance between comfort and sophistication. Style it with leather boots, structured bags and minimalist jewellery to ground the sweetness of the pattern.

Tartan

Tartan is winter drama done right. Deeply rooted in heritage, yet constantly reinterpreted, tartan brings colour, depth and personality to cold-weather dressing. The richness of this pattern shines in tailored coats, pleated skirts, scarves, wide-leg trousers and capes.

A long tartan coat over an all-black outfit becomes an instant statement, while tartan trousers paired with a fine knit and loafers feel fashion-forward without trying too hard. For a luxe finish, opt for tartans woven in fine wool or cashmere blends, and lean toward sophisticated colour stories like oxblood, navy, emerald and chocolate.

Houndstooth

Houndstooth is sharp, architectural and endlessly stylish. Its distinctive broken-check pattern instantly lends structure to any garment. Tailored blazers, pencil skirts, wide-leg trousers, long coats and even knitwear in houndstooth feel powerful and refined.

Black and white remains classic, but tonal variations in beige, grey, mocha and even muted blues feel incredibly current. It works equally well in corporate wardrobes and off-duty looks. Pair a houndstooth blazer with denim and boots for everyday polish, or wear a full suit with sleek accessories for high-impact winter dressing.
