For years, the sherwani has been the undisputed king of Indian festive menswear. However, men are now redefining occasion dressing, prioritising comfort and individuality while still holding onto cultural roots. This shift has opened the door for new silhouettes that feel lighter, more functional and genuinely personal—without sacrificing the sense of ceremony that comes with festive dressing.
Designers are responding to this change with styles that blend heritage with modern tailoring, making festive dressing more exciting and more wearable than ever.
“Festive wear is no longer just about following a rulebook,” says Ravi Gupta, Creative Designer and Director, Gargee Designer’s, New Delhi. “Men want to feel confident, comfortable and stylish, without losing the emotional connection to tradition,” he adds.

The modern festive wardrobe is evolving, and the most notable change is how men now view the sherwani. Gupta says, “While the sherwani remains a cherished classic, new-age silhouettes are emerging that allow men to express their personality without looking overly formal.”
What’s driving this shift, reveals Gupta, is a desire for versatility. Men want outfits that transition effortlessly from rituals to receptions, from day to night. Fabrics are lighter, cuts are cleaner, and embellishments are more restrained. “The modern man wants clothing that reflects his lifestyle. He doesn’t want to feel trapped in heavy layers or elaborate designs. He wants something that feels natural, but still festive,” adds Gupta.
The festive wardrobe of today is less about obligation and more about expression. Going beyond the sherwani isn’t a rejection of tradition, it’s an evolution of it. Men are now embracing outfits that feel personal, comfortable and modern, while still honouring the cultural spirit of the occasion.

Gupta shares the latest trends in men’s ethnic fashion:
The bandhgala suit has quickly become the go-to alternative for men who still crave a regal look. Its structured tailoring gives a royal silhouette, while minimal ornamentation keeps it modern. Pair it with straight trousers or dhoti pants, and it works beautifully from ceremony to evening party.
Indo-western sets are the season’s biggest trend because they offer freedom of movement and modern appeal. Asymmetric kurtas, statement jackets, longline Nehru jackets and contemporary drapes reimagine classic shapes with new fabrics and cuts. It’s the perfect blend of tradition and modern design.
For men who prefer a more understated look, raw silk or chanderi kurtas remain a timeless choice. Styled with embroidered scarves, brooches or handmade shoes, these outfits are elegant without being loud. The achkan—lighter and more streamlined than a sherwani, also makes a stylish pick for summer weddings or intimate celebrations.
Co-ord sets are becoming a staple for pre-wedding events and cocktail nights. Available in tonal shades, handloom textures and vintage prints, they offer comfort with a touch of glamour. Ideal for relaxed, off-location weddings where ease and style are equally important.
