  • Apply oils and sunscreen before Holi to protect your skin.
  • Use gentle cleansers and avoid harsh scrubbing post-Holi.
  • Hydrate well and choose mild facials for skin recovery.

Holi is joyous, vibrant and delightfully chaotic — but for your skin, it can be a stressful affair. Between synthetic colours, allergens, sun exposure and repeated washing, your skin often pays the price long after the celebrations end. A little preparation and mindful cleansing can keep your glow intact.

Here’s how to protect your skin before stepping into the colour play, and how to nurse it back to health once the festivities are over

Create a protective shield, pre-Holi

Think of pre-Holi skincare as building armour with light, breathable, but effective methods. Start with deep moisturisation. Apply a generous layer of coconut oil, almond oil, or even a thick aloe vera gel on your face, neck, arms and legs. Oils create a protective barrier that prevents colours from penetrating deeply into the skin, making them easier to wash off later.

Don’t skip sunscreen. Holi is often played outdoors, and prolonged sun exposure can lead to tanning and sunburn, especially when your skin barrier is already compromised by colours. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and let it absorb fully before stepping out.

For those prone to allergies, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly around sensitive areas like the corners of the nose, lips and under the eyes. This reduces direct contact with harsh pigments. Keep makeup minimal. Heavy foundation or concealer mixed with colours and sweat can clog pores and trigger breakouts.

Gentle cleansing is a must, post-Holi

Post-Holi, resist the urge to scrub aggressively. Harsh rubbing or chemical-laden cleansers can damage the skin barrier further. Use a mild cleanser or a homemade mix of besan (gram flour) and milk to gently lift colours. A paste of curd and turmeric can help soothe irritation and restore brightness naturally. Avoid very hot water, go for  lukewarm water is gentler on stressed skin.

Repairing pigmentation and dryness

Patience is essential, especially when you are cleaning your skin after a fun day out in the sun. Quick fixes often do more harm than good. Dr Aishwarya Selvaraj, Founder and Chief Doctor of Bio Revive, advises, “Opt for superficial, mild exfoliation that helps with barrier reinforcement and removes the color slowly but effectively. With regard to facials, hydration is key at this point. Opt for Korean facials like O2 Derm or hydrating facials like pumpkin facials. Do not go for harsh facials with intense exfoliation. Choose facials that have mild exfoliation, followed by nutrition supplementation to the skin superficially, and also work on your skin internally. Continue with omega supplements, vitamin C, and hydration to help your skin bounce back effectively.”

Avoid deep chemical peels immediately after Holi, as they can wreak havoc on an already compromised barrier. For body recovery, infrared sauna therapy can help detox gently. However, it’s important this is done under supervision, as high settings may sensitise the skin.

Hydrate inside and out

Post-celebration skin needs replenishment. Remember to play with colour, not with your skin barrier. Drink plenty of water, include vitamin C-rich fruits, and apply a hydrating serum followed by a nourishing moisturiser. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides and niacinamide help restore balance.
