  • Plato valued quality over quantity and mindful mastery in all tasks
  • Good actions strengthen character and inspire others to act positively
  • Self-control and learning are key to personal growth and inner strength

Greek philosopher Plato is known for his profound works that have formed the foundation of Western thought. He was a student of Socrates and a teacher to Aristotle.

Born in 428 BC in Athens, he started as a poet and a wrestler, but soon became deeply interested in philosophy. His works continue to influence the way we perceive truth, justice, love, and human life.

Here are a few life lessons he has left behind that will inspire you to think and act differently.

“Better a little which is well done, than a great deal imperfectly”

Plato emphasises that quality matters more than quantity. Doing one task properly is more important than doing multiple tasks poorly. This aligns with his pursuit of excellence and true knowledge. Every task should be done mindfully, prioritising high standards and mastery.

“Good actions give strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others”

When our intentions and deeds are kind and noble, they strengthen and develop our character. Good actions reaffirm the positive qualities we have. This has a chain reaction, as this inspires others to be positive and follow suit. So doing good makes you stronger and makes others desire the same.

“For a man to conquer himself is the first and noblest of all victories”

When we learn to gain control over our emotions and desires and take responsibility for our actions, it is a victory greater than acquiring empires. Plato believes mastering the inner world is more important than external achievements. Self-discipline and self-control are victories in themselves.

“Knowledge is the food of the soul”

Plato emphasises the importance of learning throughout our lives for nourishing the inner self. It is as important as feeding the body with food. Learning leads to growth, and the wisdom that comes our way along the path helps our souls thrive. It is essential for spiritual growth, improvement, and success.

“Courage is knowing what not to fear”

For Plato, courage isn’t about the absence of fear, but it is more about knowing which fears are worth battling and which are not. Some fears are just trivial anxieties that the mind should know not to pay heed to. Thus, he suggests using intellect and reason rather than panic. It helps us understand what matters to us and what doesn’t serve us.
