  • DEST and Typing Skill Test have strict rules on keyboard use, errors, and timing
  • Admit card, photo ID, and two photos are mandatory for exam hall entry

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has begun the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) 2025 Tier-2 examination today, January 18, 2026, marking an important phase for lakhs of government job aspirants. The two-day examination, held across numerous centers in India on January 18 and 19, sees candidates who successfully cleared Tier-1 competing for officer-level positions in various central government departments.

In a significant update, the Commission has issued specialized operational rules for the computer-based Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) and Typing Skill Test, which are mandatory components for all applicants.

Essential Guidelines for DEST and Typing Test

The Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) is a pivotal segment of the SSC CGL Tier-2 stage. The SSC has outlined specific technical protocols to ensure uniformity:

Keyboard Usage: Examination centers will provide standard keyboards. Candidates are permitted to use the 'backspace' and 'arrow keys' during the test. However, emphasis is placed on completing the given paragraph within the fixed time limit.

Error Scoring System: Accuracy is paramount. The evaluation will distinguish between 'full mistakes' and 'half mistakes.' Omitting words or entering incorrect text can substantially impact the final score.

Time Management: Adherence to the stipulated time for the typing test is critical. The test interface will automatically lock once the time elapses, preventing further input.

Mandatory Documents for Exam Hall Entry

Candidates appearing for the SSC CGL Tier-2 exam must carry the following documents to gain admission to the test venue:

Admit Card: A clear printout of the hall ticket downloaded from the official SSC website: ssc.gov.in.

Photo Identity Proof: An original government-issued ID such as an Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, or Driving License.

Photographs: Two recent, identical passport-sized color photographs.

Prohibited Items and Exam Day Protocol

The Commission has enforced a strict policy against certain items inside the examination hall. Prohibited articles include:

  • Mobile phones, smartwatches, or any wearable electronic devices.
  • Bluetooth equipment, calculators, or electronic pens.
  • Any form of paper, stationery, bags, or personal watches (both smart and analog).
  • Non-compliance will lead to immediate disqualification from the ongoing examination and possible further disciplinary action.

Reporting Time and Advisory

Candidates must report to their assigned center strictly as per the time indicated on their admit card. Entry will be denied after the prescribed gate closure time.

Given the prevailing winter conditions in many parts of the country, aspirants are strongly advised to plan their journey in advance, allowing for potential delays due to fog or cold weather, to ensure timely arrival.

The successful conduction of Tier-2 will be followed by further stages as per the SSC CGL 2025 recruitment cycle, bringing candidates closer to prestigious roles in ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India.
