Understanding and dealing with the hidden challenges in living with cerebral palsy everyday

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is often thought of as a condition affecting movement, but its impact goes far beyond muscles and coordination. Children and adults with CP face unique challenges in learning, communication, and daily activities, not because of reduced intelligence, but because their bodies must work harder to accomplish even simple tasks.

For most people, learning to write, speak, or simply get dressed happens without much thought. However, for someone living with Cerebral Palsy, these everyday activities can demand extraordinary effort. “Communication is the medium that joins us to the world, yet for many with CP, there are barriers that are not easy to cross,” says Dr Atampreet Singh, Senior Director and Head of Neurosciences, ShardaCare Healthcity.

Cerebral Palsy is a lifelong neurological condition that affects movement, muscle tone, and coordination. But beyond the visible motor challenges, CP influences learning, social participation, and self-expression. “The chronic fatigue from constant physical exertion directly affects their capacity to participate in day-to-day learning and social lives,” Dr Singh explains to Moneycontrol. Many children appear uninterested in school or play, not because of lack of curiosity, but because even small physical tasks sap their energy.

Speech and communication can also be affected. Impaired speech muscles may prevent a child from expressing complex ideas, even when they fully understand them. Dr Singh compares it to lifting a heavy burden with every word spoken or step taken. This “locked-in” feeling can lead to frustration and behavioural issues, which are often misdiagnosed. “We must use assistive technology and, more importantly, give time to listen,” he emphasises. Reducing the pressure of time allows children to reveal their true potential.

  • Challenges in learning: Children with CP may struggle with tasks like holding a pencil, writing, or participating in class activities. Dr Aparna Gupta, Associate Director of Neurology at ISIC Multispecialty Hospital, shares that these difficulties are not indicative of low intelligence. Misconceptions about learning problems can prevent children from receiving the support they need.

  • Difficulties in communication: Speaking clearly can be exhausting due to weak or stiff speech muscles. This can mask a child’s true understanding of ideas and emotions. With patience and tools like speech therapy or assistive devices, many children learn new ways to communicate effectively.

  • Impact on daily activities: Simple everyday tasks, buttoning a shirt, holding utensils, or even swallowing, require extra effort. Muscle tightness and coordination challenges drain energy, leaving less for socialising, play, or school participation.
  • The role of support and therapy: Early intervention, therapy, and assistive technology can help children adapt and thrive. “The brain has a strong ability to adapt,” says Dr Gupta. With the right support, many children find ways to communicate, learn, and manage daily life despite their physical challenges.

  • Appreciating effort and resilience: Instead of focusing on limitations, society should value the determination and adaptability of individuals with CP. Every task accomplished reflects extraordinary strength and perseverance in a world built for people without such challenges.
