Otitis Media symptoms: How middle ear infection in children can lead to hearing impairment if left untreated

Otitis media is an inflammatory infection of the middle ear, commonly following upper respiratory infections, especially in children. It presents with ear pain, fever, hearing loss, and discharge. Early diagnosis and appropriate medical or surgical treatment help prevent complications and hearing impairment.

  • Otitis media is middle ear inflammation, common in kids and adults.
  • Symptoms include ear pain, hearing loss, fever, and possible ear discharge.
  • Treatment includes pain relief, antibiotics, and sometimes surgery for chronic cases.

Otitis media refers to the inflammatory condition of the middle ear, which can affect both young children and adults. It is often followed by an infection of the upper respiratory tract. This condition also leads to an accumulation of fluid behind the tympanic membrane (the ear drum). If left untreated, it may lead to severe complications and hearing impairment.

Causes of Otitis Media

As the Eustachian tube, (the canal that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat), is shorter in younger children, they are more likely to develop an infection in the middle ear. Risk factors for development of otitis media include frequent upper respiratory tract infections and exposure to tobacco smoke, along with overcrowded areas and poor socioeconomic conditions.

Common organisms that may lead to this condition include Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilius influenzae.

Symptoms of Otitis Media

One of the most prominent symptoms of otitis media is ear pain, which is more commonly observed in acute conditions. It may be severe and of throbbing type, and can worsen at night.

Conductive hearing loss is another common symptom of middle ear infection, as the fluid in the middle ear hampers the movement of the ear ossicles (the three tiny bones in the middle ear). Muffled hearing and a sense of fullness in the ears is experienced by the affected individual.

Acute otitis media also shows fever, which may be seen in children along with other systemic features like irritability and malaise. Reduced appetite may also be noticed by the family members.

Discharge from the ear often indicates a perforation of the tympanic membrane. This discharge may be purulent and foul-smelling, and may become blood-stained as well. Persistent discharge may indicate chronic otitis media.

The health-care provider may use an otoscope to visualise the tympanic membrane, which is congested and bulging in case of acute otitis media. The normal ‘cone of light’ is not seen in this condition.

How to treat Otitis Media

Treatment is often by analgesics like paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain and fever. Antibiotics like amoxicillin may be advised to combat infection.

Surgical management may be required in persistent or recurring cases.

It is advised to not take cold showers or swim post surgery to avoid complications.

FAQs on Otitis Media

What is otitis media?

Otitis media is an inflammation of the middle ear, common in both children and adults, often following an upper respiratory tract infection. It leads to fluid accumulation behind the eardrum, which can cause hearing issues if untreated.

What causes otitis media?

Otitis media is caused by frequent upper respiratory infections, exposure to tobacco smoke, and socio-economic factors. Younger children are more prone due to their shorter Eustachian tubes. Common bacteria include Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilius influenzae.

What are the symptoms of otitis media?

Symptoms include ear pain, conductive hearing loss, a sense of fullness in the ear, fever, irritability, reduced appetite, and ear discharge, which may indicate a tympanic membrane perforation.

How is otitis media diagnosed?

Healthcare providers use an otoscope to examine the eardrum. In acute otitis media, the eardrum is congested and bulging, and the normal ‘cone of light’ is absent.

What is the treatment for otitis media?

Treatment includes analgesics like paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain and fever, and antibiotics like amoxicillin for infection. Persistent cases may require surgical intervention, and post-surgery, avoiding cold showers or swimming is advised.
