Optimal gut health has got lots of attention as the foundation of good overall health, affecting everything from digestion immune system, weight loss and even mood. There is increasingly more attention paid to the possible role of everyday foods and beverages in nourishing (or irritating) our digestive systems. One of these, orange juice — long thought of as a mere source of vitamin C — has recently received renewed attention for its underappreciated potential to support gut health.
While nutritionists would recommend eating whole fruit for a good fibre source rather than drinking juice, they say orange juice can still have a supporting role in maintaining your gut health if consumed properly and in moderation. It’s rich in bioactive compounds that communicate with gut bacteria, aid digestion and work to combat inflammation of the digestive tract.
Orange juice offers some great benefits specially for someone who is not very hungry, has mild digestive sluggishness or more oxidative stress as explained by Dr Kavita Malhotra -Senior Clinical Nutritionist and Head- Digestive Wellness at NutriCare. It's not all squeezed from the same fruit, she says, and how you drink it makes a big difference. When selected carefully — fresh, unsweetened and taken at the right time — orange juice may be an addition to a gut-friendly diet rather than detrimental.
Orange juice has natural polyphenols that serve as prebiotics, feeding your beneficial gut bacteria. “And its these compounds that are beneficial for gut health, as they increase microbial diversity – which is crucial for effective digestion and nutrient absorption,” explains Dr Malhotra.
The acids present in orange juice encourage the release of digestive enzymes. This in turn can aid the breakdown of food (specifically proteins and fats), leading to easier digestion and less bloat for some people.
An orange juice is a powerhouse to cure inflammation because it's rich in vitamin c and flavonoids (including hesperidin) which can reduce oxygen stress on the gut lining. A healthier lining of the gut, lowers chance of irritation/discomfort and increases barrier function.
Orange juice can also help to promote healthy gut movement and contribute to regular bowel movements. Sometimes this can be particularly useful if you have a mild amount of constipation that has been caused by dehydration or not enough fruits.
The antioxidants present in orange juice aid in tissue repair, thus helping the integrity of the intestinal lining. Especially useful while recovering from minor digestive infections or when antibiotics have been prescribed.
