Causes of constipation: Drink enough water, include high-fibre foods in your daily diet to relieve symptoms

Constipation occurs when bowel movements become infrequent, hard, or painful. It often results from low fibre, poor hydration, inactivity, or certain medications. Persistent constipation can cause discomfort, bloating, and straining. Improving diet, fluid intake, and lifestyle usually brings relief, with medical help when needed.

Constipation is the infrequent or difficult passage of stools, which may include passage of hard stools or involve an excessive amount of straining. The person may have a sense of incomplete evacuation. It is generally noted that constipation occurs when there are less than three bowel movements per week.

However, it can depend on the person’s usual frequency of defaecation. Constipation can be functional or secondary, and may be caused by some medications as well.

A low fibre dietoften leads to difficulty in the passes of feces. If your platter does not include sufficient amounts of fruits, vegetables or whole grains, you are likely to become constipated, as these food items aid in colonic transport of stools. Not consuming enough fluids or liquids adds to hardening of feces.

The motility of the gastrointestinal tract is also influenced by excessive intake of processed foods and dairy products.

Climates with more heat, fever and heavy exercise can lead to dehydration if enough liquids are not taken. Hence, one of the best ways to prevent constipation is to drink plenty of fluids.

Long periods of sitting and a lack of exercise, along with bed rest post surgery, can all lead to a constipated bowel. Regular walking and stretching can aid in stimulating bowel movements and regulating digestive activity.

Systemic conditions like reduced levels of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism), diabetes mellitus with autonomic involvement, and raised levels of calcium (hypercalcemia), can contribute to constipation. Other conditions like uremia and Parkinson’s disease affect the gastrointestinal motility, as they may impair the nerve or muscle function of the bowel.

Other causes include strictures and colorectal carcinomas, along with anal fissures. These may also lead to a difficulty in passing stools.

Some people can experience constipation because of factors like stress, anxiety, and changes in the daily routine.

The initial management involves increasing the intake of dietary fibre and making certain that the affected individual consumes enough liquids. Stool softeners may be advised to ease the passage. Warm water and lemon raisins have been found to enhance gut motility.

Adding physical activity to your routine is crucial, along with adequate stress management techniques.
