For this reason, hydration is vital to keep energy up, digestion in check with proper performance of the brain and enhance healthy skin.

But a person’s water needs are not the same for everyone. Age, body weight, physical activity, climate and overall health-all play a very important role in daily water needs of the person. How Much Water You Should Drink By Age

Children (4–12 Years)

Children should drink 5–7 glasses of water a day for proper hydration. Water supports their growing bodies, brain development and concentration at school. Active children who run around outdoors or play sports may require additional fluids. Hydration is key to present comfort, and drinking water also supports future-energy needs.

Teenagers (13–18 Years)

Teens generally need about 7–9 glasses of water per day to stay hydrated. During adolescence, the body experiences rapid growth and hormonal changes and activities such as sports or workouts can lead to further fluid loss from sweat.Staying hydrated enhances concentration, endurance and physical performance in general.

Adults (19–60 Years)

For the body to function healthily, most adults need 8–10 glasses of water a day.

Staying well-hydrated assists with digestion and metabolism and helps regulate body temperature. Those who work out regularly or live in hot weather might need more. Regular hydration also benefits the kidneys and skin.

Older Adults (60+ Years)

Dehydration is a considerable risk for aging adults, and they should strive for 7–8 glasses of water every day. Hydration, therefore, is key in maintaining joint health, digestion and circulation since as one gets older the body’s thirst signals grow weaker making it easy to forget about hydration — a feeling someone should never have.

Proper hydration also lowers the chance of fatigue, dizziness and urinary issues.

When Water Becomes Too Much

Drinking beyond 4–5 liters of water at a time can be harmful as excess water may dilute the sodium levels in blood and cause an imbalance. This condition — called overhydration or water intoxication — can interfere with brain function. Headaches, nausea and confusion are early symptoms that can become serious health risks in severe cases.

The safest way to stay healthy and hydrated, Dr Rawat said, is to listen to your body’s signals of thirst and maintain balanced hydration throughout the day.
