Holi, the festival of colours, brings vibrant joy and boundless celebration for children in India and around the world. As we get ready to celebrate Holi 2024, parents must prioritise the safety and well-being of their little ones. Amidst the colourful revelry, it's crucial to use non-toxic colours, protect valuables, ensure hydration, and shield children's eyes with protective eyewear. By taking these precautions, we can ensure a joyful and safe Holi celebration for our children.

Dr Nihar Parekh, a senior pediatrician and Founder of Cheers Child Care and SOCC (Second Opinion Online Consultation for Children) offers essential safety tips to make this Holi a memorable and safe experience for children.

Safe, non-toxic colours

"The cornerstone of a safe Holi celebration is the use of the right tools—non-toxic, skin-friendly colours," Parekh says, emphasising the importance of avoiding harmful chemicals that can harm children's delicate skin. "Opting for organic hues not only ensures their well-being but also adds to the joy of the festival. Let us not tarnish this celebration with colours that could cause irritation or rashes. Instead, choose colours that bring smiles without any harm," he adds.

Hydration is crucial

Hydration is often overlooked during festive celebrations, yet it remains a critical aspect of children's well-being, says Parekh. "Amidst the chaos and fun, it's easy for kids to forget to drink water. It is very important to keep them hydrated throughout the festivities. Proper hydration ensures that they stay healthy and energetic, enhancing the joy of the celebration," he says.

Protect eyes

The eyes, being sensitive organs, require special care during Holi. Parekh recommends equipping children with protective eyewear to shield their eyes from inadvertent splashes. "This simple precaution can prevent infections and irritation, ensuring that the festivities are not dampened by discomfort or tears," he says.

Parekh adds, "It is important to prioritise safety and well-being during Holi. From using non-toxic colour, staying hydrated, and safeguarding children's eyes, these simple yet crucial steps can make all the difference. Let us celebrate Holi with love, laughter, and the knowledge that we have taken every measure to keep our children safe and happy during this festive season."
