In the times we live in, there’s no dearth of options when it comes to basic grocery items, including milk. The shelves in the supermarket and even online stores are flooded with a variety that makes it difficult to decide which one to pick. Reading and understanding labels can also be challenging for some.

However, choosing the right kind of milk matters to meet your nutritional requirements. French biochemist Jessie Inchauspé, popularly known as Glucose Goddess on Instagram, took to her Instagram and rated some of the top options available today, rating them from best to worst.

Oat milk

It is one of the most popular plant-based, vegan alternatives used in teas and coffees around the world. It has no lactose, soy, or nuts. But Jessie called it a “pasta juice,” rating it 0 out of 10. She said, "It is very high in glucose and basically a starch juice. It has a lot of additives and emulsifiers.”

Rice milk

This one was also put in the worst category for being just a starch juice, which causes a glucose spike. Rice milk is made from brown rice and brown rice syrup. It also contains plant-based oils, sweeteners, or flavourings such as vanilla, making it unhealthy for consumption.

Soy milk

Made from soaked and ground soybeans, soy milk is marketed as a plant-based, lactose-free option that’s also nutritious. Jessie called this one better than oat and rice milk. She said it doesn’t cause as big a glucose spike, but usually contains a lot of additives and sweeteners.

Low-fat or half-and-half cow’s milk

Yet again, the French biochemist rated it as one of the better options. She said it’s low in fat and has higher nutrients, but usually creates a bigger glucose spike than its alternative, which is whole milk.

Whole milk

Jessie declared it to be one of the best options for the glucose levels. She said, “It is high in healthy fats and protein that keeps your glucose levels steady.” It is also a good source of nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Whole milk also keeps you full for longer.

Unsweetened milk

The French biochemist called almonds or coconut milk a better alternative. But warned that they should be unsweetened. “A sweetened one causes a glucose spike, but unsweetened is safe for your glucose levels,” she added.
