  • Wearing tight or dirty socks to bed may harm circulation and skin health
  • Sleeping in socks can raise risk of fungal infections and disrupt sleep quality
  • Doctors advise clean, breathable socks for warmth without health risks

It is a common practice to sleep with socks on in the winter but doctors say it may pose hidden health risks. With a certain amount of hygiene however, you can avoid some pitfalls of staying warm.

When it gets cold during winter, many people slip on socks before hopping under the covers. Wearing socks to bed is a safe and smart practice, especially for people with poor circulation or cold feet. Although the practice seems relatively benign (if not beneficial), some medical professionals warn that it might bring along with it a few unexpected health risks if done improperly or without proper hygiene.

Dr Arvind Khanna, Senior Consultant-Internal Medicine and Sleep Health says that it is not bad for some but can lead to conditions which can have a negative effect on blood circulation, skin health and sleep quality. “Good sleep requires some warmth, but overheating or slept-in fabrics can wreak havoc on the body’s natural temperature regulation,” Dr. Khanna says.

The human body is sensitive to temperature rhythm when you sleep. Anything that disrupts this balance- such as socks that are too tight, dirty or non-breathable — will affect your circulation and may promote bacteria growth or worsen health-related issues. Knowing what gains and risks come with it will allow you to make better decisions for your winter sleep comfort. Here, the major health concerns doctors say you shouldn't ignore if sleep with socks on every night:

The Health Risks of Sleeping In Socks

Risk of Reduced Blood Circulation

Socks that are too tight or bands with elastic can cut off circulation to the feet, especially during extended periods of sleep. Low blood flow can lead to numbness, tingling or pain and stray dangerous in patients with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease.

Increased Chance of Fungal Infections

Because socks contain moisture and can cause feet to sweat more than usual, wearing them overnight provides a "breeding ground" for fungus. If socks are wet, unwashed, or made of a type of artificial fiber the chance of athlete’s foot and skin disease jumps considerably.

Disruption of Natural Body Temperature

Warmth can help kick-start sleep, but overheating can increase the chances of disrupting deep-sleep cycles. Thick socks can cause the body to heat up naturally and thus cannot help you sleep soundly which results in frequent waking up, lack of clear mind and poor quality.

Skin Irritation and Allergic Reactions

Sensitive skin is apt to be irritated by certain fabrics, dyes or detergents if in contact for a long time. If the socks aren’t breathable or freshly cleaned, having your feet cloaked in fabric could make eczema worse, cause itching or result in a rash.

Hygiene-Related Health Concerns

Socks are worn all day and they trap sweat, bacteria and dirt. Not changing them before bed can increase exposure to germs, which may cause some stinkiness, skin infections or a compromised skin barrier over time.

When Socks Can Actually Help

Clean, roomy cotton or wool socks can enhance circulation and assist people who have cold feet or insomnia. “The solution lies in moderation and hygiene — wear breathable fabric and steer away from wearing tight socks,” says Dr Arvind Khanna.
