Broccoli, a versatile and nutrient-rich vegetable, is a summer staple known for its health benefits and culinary flexibility. This cruciferous vegetable thrives in warm weather, making it a popular choice for summer gardens and farmers markets. Rich in vitamins C and K, fibre, and antioxidants, broccoli supports immune function, bone health, and digestive wellness. Its high-water content and refreshing crunch make it ideal for light, summer dishes such as salads, stir-fries, and grilled sides.

Ashwini Narang, a Delhi-based dietician and founder of Farm Plus, lists down some key benefits of broccoli in a more detailed way.

Nutrient-rich: Broccoli is packed with vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin A, folate, and potassium. These nutrients are essential for overall health and can help support immune function, bone health, and cellular functions.

High in fibre: Broccoli is a good source of dietary fibre, which aids in digestion, helps maintain bowel health, lowers cholesterol levels, and can assist in weight management by promoting a feeling of fullness.

Antioxidant properties: Broccoli contains powerful antioxidants, such as sulforaphane, glucoraphanin, and beta-carotene. These compounds help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, reducing the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Supports heart health: The fibre, potassium, and antioxidants in broccoli contribute to heart health. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure, while fibre and antioxidants help reduce cholesterol levels and prevent arterial damage.

Anti-inflammatory effects: Broccoli contains bioactive compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds can help reduce inflammation in the body, which is linked to a variety of chronic conditions, including arthritis and heart disease.

Bone health: Broccoli is a good source of calcium and vitamin K, both of which are important for maintaining strong and healthy bones. Regular consumption can help prevent osteoporosis and improve bone density.

Supports detoxification: The phytochemicals in broccoli, particularly sulforaphane, support the body’s natural detoxification processes by activating enzymes that neutralise and eliminate toxins.

Improves skin health: The vitamins and antioxidants in broccoli, especially vitamin C, help promote healthy skin by boosting collagen production and protecting against skin damage caused by UV radiation and environmental pollutants.

Aids in blood sugar control: Broccoli has a low glycemic index and contains fibre, both of which help regulate blood sugar levels. This makes it a good choice for individuals with diabetes or those looking to prevent blood sugar spikes.

Supports eye health: Broccoli contains nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for maintaining healthy vision and may reduce the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
