As India celebrates Republic Day today, it feels fitting to look back at a film that captured the spirit of unity, resilience, and national pride like few others. Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De India, released in 2007, remains a timeless sports drama that still gives goosebumps with its final match and quiet moments of triumph. But here’s a throwback many fans still find fascinating: before Shah Rukh Khan made Kabir Khan iconic, the role was first offered to Salman Khan.
Over the years, there were plenty of rumours about why Salman walked away from Chak De India. Some reports claimed there were fee-related disagreements with producer Aditya Chopra. Others suggested creative differences. For a long time, the real reason remained wrapped in speculation. It wasn’t until much later, during the promotions of Sultan, that Salman Khan himself addressed the chatter and set the record straight, in his own unmistakable style.
Speaking about the film, Salman brushed aside the rumours with humour and honesty. He joked, “I left it because even Shah Rukh Khan should be a part of a few great films.” The line instantly made headlines, not just because of the wit, but because it reflected the easy camaraderie and unspoken rivalry between the two superstars.
Salman then went on to explain his decision in more detail, revealing that the role of Kabir Khan simply did not fit his on-screen image at the time. “When I was offered Chak De, my image was totally different as I was doing Partner and all those kinds of films,” he said. According to him, audience expectations played a big role in his thinking. “My only thing in Chak De was that my fans would expect me to wear a wig and win the match for India, which would not go for the film. That was not my genre at that point in time.”
He also acknowledged that Chak De India was a serious, performance-driven film, very different from the commercial entertainers he was known for then. “It was a more serious kind of film and I was doing more of a commercial kind of cinema, which I am still doing,” Salman explained. At the same time, he made it clear that he did not look down upon such films. “I would never move out of the commercial cinema zone, but it is just that there would be a lot of meaningful cinema in the commercial zone.”
In hindsight, the casting worked out perfectly. Shah Rukh Khan’s restrained, intense portrayal of Kabir Khan became one of the most respected performances of his career. Directed by Shimit Amin, Chak De India opened to modest numbers but went on to become a massive word-of-mouth success, eventually emerging as the second-highest grosser of 2007, just behind Om Shanti Om.
On Republic Day, as the tricolour flies high, Chak De India stands as a reminder that sometimes the right actor finds the role not by design, but by destiny.
