As Bobby Deol celebrates his birthday today (January 27), his journey feels less like a comeback story and more like a reminder of how brutally honest survival can be in the film industry. There was a time when success followed his surname automatically and producers lined up outside his door. Then came the silence.

Bobby Deol has never hidden the fact that his career hit a rough patch in the early 2000s. As Bollywood evolved, he found himself struggling to keep pace. While other actors embraced aggressive PR strategies and reinvention, Bobby waited for things to work the way they always had. They did not.

In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Bobby Deol once spoke candidly about the slow, painful realization that he was no longer the star he once was.

“This was a slow process. People would meet me nicely, but they would soon go away and form their own groups, and I would be left alone. The number of invitations I got for parties started to decrease,” he said.

It was not dramatic or sudden. It was quiet. Subtle. And deeply isolating.

“The same people who would be so warm with me started ignoring me. But that’s what they say; people are with you as long as you have something to offer. It happened, and it happens in every industry, not just mine,” he said.

“The same people come to me now with offers, but I don’t hold anything against them,” he said after getting success with Animal.

Behind the fading invitations and professional uncertainty, another battle was unfolding. Bobby turned to alcohol during his lowest phase, a dependency that slowly began to take control. In a later interview with Raj Shamani, he spoke about how deeply it affected his family.

“I’m working for my family,” he said. “And if I see fear and sadness in their eyes… It’s not like I used to drink every day, but whenever I would, they would fear me. They just didn’t know how I would be. It’s horrible.”

He did not mince words about alcohol addiction. “Alcohol is the biggest addiction; it’s more addictive than actual drugs. It messes with your brains like narcotics,” said Bobby.

In another interview, Bobby admitted that drinking brought out his darkest side, especially around the people closest to him. “Only the people closest to you are exposed to that angry and dark side of you,” he said. “My wife… It was anger, behaving badly, saying stupid things. That’s what alcohol does to you.”

He revealed that this realization pushed him to quit. “That’s why I finally stopped drinking. It’s been more than a year,” he shared, marking a turning point not just professionally, but personally.

Throughout this period, Bobby credited his wife Tanya for standing by him when things fell apart. “Any other woman would’ve left me,” he admitted, acknowledging her role as his emotional anchor when his confidence and career were at their lowest.

Professionally, the turnaround began when Bobby swallowed his pride and asked Salman Khan for work, leading to Race 3. While the film itself received mixed reactions, Bobby’s presence was noticed. Then came Aashram, where he reinvented himself entirely, followed by Animal, which cemented his second innings.

Most recently, Bobby was seen in Aryan Khan’s directorial debut series, The Bads of Bollywood*, released on Netflix in September, signaling yet another evolution in his career.

Today, as Bobby Deol marks another year, his story stands as a quiet testament to resilience. Not the loud, headline-grabbing kind. But the kind built on self-awareness, accountability, and the courage to start over when the lights dim.
