The Supreme Court has granted regular bail to filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari Bhatt in connection with an alleged fraud case registered by the Rajasthan Police. The order brings temporary relief to the couple, who have been facing accusations of financial misappropriation linked to a business arrangement.
The case pertains to allegations of large-scale diversion and misuse of funds. Based on a complaint, an FIR was registered by the Rajasthan Police under charges related to fraud and financial irregularities. The couple subsequently moved the apex court seeking protection from arrest and challenging the proceedings initiated against them.
According to a report by ANI, the matter escalated to the Supreme Court after the couple sought relief against possible coercive action. Earlier this week, the Court had granted interim bail to Shwetambari Bhatt. In its latest order, the bench allowed their appeal for regular bail, extending sustained legal protection to both Vikram Bhatt and his wife while investigation and trial processes continue.
Regular bail offers longer-term relief compared to interim bail, which is temporary in nature. While specific conditions of the order were not immediately detailed in public summaries, such relief typically requires the accused to cooperate with the investigation, refrain from influencing witnesses, and comply with any travel restrictions imposed by the court. Legal experts underline that the grant of regular bail does not imply acquittal or a determination of innocence. It indicates that custodial interrogation is not deemed necessary at this stage of the proceedings.
The allegations against the couple revolve around claims that significant funds were diverted in connection with a business deal. The complainant has alleged financial misconduct, prompting criminal proceedings. However, the couple has contested the charges, maintaining that the dispute is essentially civil in nature and has been given a criminal dimension.
Vikram Bhatt is a prominent name in the Hindi film industry, known for his work in thriller and horror genres. Over the years, he has directed and produced several films and web projects, carving a niche in psychological dramas and supernatural narratives. His involvement in a criminal case drew considerable attention due to both his public profile and the seriousness of the charges.
The matter had earlier seen proceedings in lower courts before reaching the Supreme Court. With regular bail now granted, the couple will not be taken into custody unless they violate the conditions set by the court.
The case will now proceed before the appropriate jurisdictional court in Rajasthan. Investigating authorities are expected to continue gathering evidence, recording statements, and examining financial records related to the alleged transactions. Depending on the findings, a chargesheet may be filed, after which formal trial proceedings would begin.
