The entire cast of Border 2 including Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, Mona Singh and Sonam Bajwa along with their producers gathered in Mumbai to celebrate the success of their war movie.

At the event Varun Dhawan, who played the role of Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya in Border 2, spoke about a few deeply moments from the shoot of the movie.

He revealed about his father and noted director David Dhawan's hospitalisation and also about a late-night call from Salman Khan.

Varun revealed that during the shoot of an important sequence - Battle of Basantar in Babina, his father was admitted to the ICU. Varun said he rushed home to be by his father's side and also considered staying back to nurse him.

"I went back home and saw my father in the ICU. I told him I will stay, but he said, 'We make films to entertain people. A producer invests a lot of money. You must go back tomorrow morning and report for your call time,'" said Varun.

"When such real things happen in life, then what is trolling? It is nothing," he said.

And next he revealed a call from Salman Khan during that difficult phase of trolling and encouraged him.

"I got a call from Salman bhai at night and he was just laughing. He told me, 'Good things are about to come.' That's all he said. His belief meant a lot to me," he told all the journalists present at the event.

Varun went on to say that after Border 2 became a hit amid trolling, Salman once again called him and this time it was at around 2 am.

"He called me and said he was so happy for all of us. Then he said something that stays very close to my heart. It was 2 am and I stood up on my bed after hearing it. He said, 'I am proud of you, beta. That was a very defining moment for me because he doesn't praise people easily," he added.

Varun Dhawan trolled ahead of Border 2 release

Ahead of the film's release, Varun, who has only done comedy and rom coms in the past, was trolled heavily for his smile in the trailer and many wondered whether he would be able to do justice to the role of a decorated war hero and Param Vir Chakra awardee.

Talking about the trolling, Varun said it happens to everyone and that it has become a 'fashion.'

"First of all, trolling happens to everyone. These days it has become a fashion. Some people can take it in their stride, some cannot. Luckily, I could take it. I did not take it very seriously, and I had the support of my family," he said.

"At the end of the day, I believed in the film, I believed in Lord Krishna, and whatever this is now, I guess it has become a part of history," said Varun.

Border 2, starring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty, released on January 23, 2026.

Border 2 has minted Rs 317.75 cr in India and Rs 434.1 crore worldwide.
