Kanwar Dhillon is a talented artist currently seen in Star Plus’ Udne Ki Aasha. Along with his deft talent, he is also known for calling a spade a spade and does not mince his words.
There is a lot of debate currently going around about the eight-hour work structure. Another debate that has been going on for long is the pay cycle in the TV industry. The actor shared his thoughts on the same.
He told TellyMasala, “I don’t understand this cycle. I mean, why can’t it be simplified? You complete your monthly days of work, and the pay has to come in like a salary. Why complicate it with 90 days of the cycle? I initially had problems, and I adjusted too, but now I have come to amicable terms.”
Earlier too, Kanwar has openly advocated for reducing shifts from the current 12-hour norm to a standardized 8- to 10-hour workday to improve the well-being of the cast and crew.
What is the 90 day credit period in TV
For the unversed, the typical "90-day credit period," in which performers get paid three months after their work or an episode's first transmission, is a common grievance, especially in the Indian television industry. Poonam Dhillon and Madhura Naik are some of the artists who have also publicly condemned this arrangement, pointing out that it frequently lasts up to four or six months, making it impossible for non-stars to survive.
Madhura Naik earlier referred to the 90-day policy as "rubbish" and called on industry unions like CINTAA to fight for fair practices and monthly compensation, highlighting the necessity of an organized sector with well-defined regulations.
Actors with minor roles who depend on timely payment for daily costs, debts, and family support are disproportionately affected by the delayed cycles. Unlike A-list celebrities who can negotiate advance payments or solid contracts, these performers frequently lack strong contracts or legal backing to demand timely payments.
Payments for reruns of their work is another topic that actors talk about. The system is complicated and varies greatly depending on contracts and the distribution medium, traditional TV vs. streaming platforms, even though famous stars can make significant, long-term income from residuals.
