Actor Thalapathy Vijay appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi on Monday in connection with the Karur stampede case, a tragedy that unfolded during a political gathering in September 2025. The central agency had issued a notice to the actor last week, asking him to cooperate with the investigation.
Vijay arrived at the CBI headquarters around 11:00 AM and was questioned for nearly seven hours before leaving the premises at approximately 6:30 PM. Officials familiar with the development confirmed that the actor has been summoned again and is expected to appear before the agency on Tuesday as the probe continues.
The stampede occurred on September 27, 2025, during a public meeting organised by Vijay’s political party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in Karur. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 41 people, while more than 110 sustained injuries. The scale of the tragedy led to nationwide outrage and demands for accountability, eventually prompting a high-level investigation.
CBI officials stated that several TVK office-bearers and event organisers have also been questioned over the past few days. Acting on directions from the Supreme Court of India, the agency constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident. Investigators are currently examining eyewitness statements, video footage from the venue, crowd control arrangements, and possible organisational lapses that may have contributed to the deadly stampede. Sources indicated that a chargesheet could be filed once evidence collection and verification are completed.
The interrogation of Vijay has sparked a fresh political debate in Tamil Nadu. DMK leader Saravanan Annadurai questioned why witnesses and individuals connected to the case were being summoned to New Delhi instead of Chennai, where the CBI also has an operational office. He described the move as “against criminal law norms” and argued that the investigation could have been conducted locally.
Following the tragedy, Vijay had issued a public apology on social media, expressing grief and extending condolences to the families of the victims. Despite this, he faced sharp criticism online, with many holding him and his party responsible for alleged crowd mismanagement.
Meanwhile, Vijay remains in the spotlight for his upcoming film Jana Nayagan. The actor has not made any public statement regarding the latest round of questioning by the CBI.
