Rajinikanth starrer Jailer was a huge box office success, making between Rs 605 and Rs 650 crore globally. The film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, went on to become one of Kollywood's most successful movies ever.
Following the success of the first instalment, the makers have now announced Jailer 2, and the latest reports have suggested that Vidya Balan has officially joined the cast of the sequel.
According to Pinkvilla, a source close to the development has confirmed that Vidya has recently signed the film. The source said, “Vidya Balan recently signed on for Jailer 2 and was completely impressed by the script.”
The insider added, “Her character is important to the story as she plays a strong, layered role, bringing a major turning point in the film. Her presence will add intensity, making her one of the important characters of Jailer 2.”
In an attempt to profit from the holiday weekend, the producers are planning a big theatrical release on August 14, 2026, as confirmed by a small birdie. It is still up for debate, though. It's interesting to note that the first instalment of Jailer was also released in August and went on to break box office records. With a strong cast and lofty goals, Jailer 2 is expected to be larger and more spectacular.

Rajinikanth will reprise his role of Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2, which is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and made by Sun Pictures. The production will have a pan-Indian appeal thanks to cameos by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Nandamuri Balakrishna, and Mithun Chakraborty.
Filming for Jailer 2 started in Chennai on March 10, 2025, and has since moved on to schedules in Palakkad and Goa. The upcoming sequel will continue Muthuvel Pandian's quest by putting him up against far bigger threats and fulfilling the promise of dramatic action and carnage.
