The producers of the highly anticipated Tamil film Jana Nayagan, starring actor-politician Vijay, have taken a significant step in the ongoing censorship dispute by filing a plea to withdraw their legal case against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) from the Madras High Court. The hearing on this request is scheduled for February 10, 2026.
The legal battle began after Jana Nayagan, originally slated for release on January 9, 2026, faced a standstill due to delays in obtaining its censor certificate despite compliance with recommended edits.
The production team had earlier filed a writ petition challenging the CBFC’s handling of the certification process, claiming that the film had met all suggested modifications yet still wasn’t granted clearance.
In recent weeks, the CBFC referred the movie to its Revising Committee, indicating that further review was necessary even after the initial examining panel’s recommendations. This prompted the producers to reassess their legal strategy, with reports now confirming they have opted to drop the court challenge in favour of pursuing certification directly through the Revising Committee.
The shift marks a possible de-escalation in the months-long dispute, which saw multiple legal rounds and significant public attention due to the star power attached to Jana Nayagan — marketed as Vijay’s final film before his full-time political engagement.
Sources indicate that the decision has been taken to avoid further delays and to secure certification at the earliest. Jana Nayagan, originally scheduled for release on January 9, was postponed after certification issues arose.

The Madras High Court’s February 10 hearing will formally address the withdrawal, after which Jana Nayagan is expected to proceed through standard censor board procedures.
