Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan was postponed just two days ahead of its scheduled release due to a delay in the issuance of the censor certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Despite not receiving clearance from the CBFC, ticket bookings for the film had already opened in select theatres across India as well as in international markets. However, following the last-minute cancellation, the Vijay starrer is reportedly facing losses amounting to nearly Rs 50 crore.

Anticipation for Jana Nayagan had soared ever since Vijay announced that the film would be his final outing before entering politics full-time. As the release date approached, demand for tickets reached an all-time high. Several local theatres in Chennai allegedly sold tickets at exorbitant prices, with black market rates reportedly going as high as Rs 5,000 per ticket.

According to film tracking website Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan earned ₹10.68 crore in India, including blocked seats. However, due to inflated prices in the black ticket market, trade estimates suggest that the film’s opening day collection could have been even higher.

In the international circuit, Jana Nayagan outperformed all other Sankranti and Pongal releases, including Prabhas’ The Raja Saab, which was scheduled to release in the same week. According to reports, the Vijay-starrer minted nearly Rs 32 crore from overseas markets on its opening day alone. The film witnessed exceptional momentum in key territories such as North America, the UK and Malaysia.

The abrupt cancellation of Jana Nayagan at the last minute is expected to have a significant impact on its overall box office performance.

In the latest development related to the Jana Nayagan release controversy, the makers have officially announced that the film’s release has been postponed. Production house KVN Productions issued a statement confirming that the release has been deferred indefinitely.

The statement read, “It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of Jana Nayagan, eagerly awaited on January 9, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control.”

It further stated, “We deeply understand the anticipation, excitement, and emotions surrounding this film, and this decision has not been an easy one for any of us. The new release date will be announced at the earliest.”

The postponement has resulted in major reshuffling of theatre allocations across India and in overseas markets. Trade analysts have also claimed that the delay could impact the credibility of Tamil films in international markets, as Jana Nayagan was considered one of the biggest releases of the season.

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is yet to receive a new release date. Fans are eagerly awaiting an official announcement regarding the film’s grand theatrical release.
