The highest-grossing Marathi movie of 2025, Dashavatar, has accomplished yet another remarkable milestone. The film is now shortlisted for the 2026 Oscars. The film has created history by becoming the first film to bag the global stage.

After Homebound, it is the second Indian movie to be released this year that has been shortlisted for the Oscars.

Dashavatar has entered the ‘Main Open Film Category.’

Dashavatar, which is currently accessible for streaming on Zee5 (OTTplay Premium), is incredibly popular due to Dilip Prabhavalkar's performance. The audience was enthralled with his artistic metamorphosis in a number of sequences, which kept them returning to see the film in theatres.

In addition to Abhinay Berde, Priyadarshini Indalkar, Siddharth Menon, Aarti Wadagbalkar, Ravi Kale, and Vijay Kenkre, Dashavatar is based on Marathi mythology.

The film was a retelling of Lord Vishnu's ten avatars and was set in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. As it happens, the film was the first to raise awareness of local Marathi cinema worldwide.

The film revolves around an ageing performer from the Dashavatar folk theatre who strives to overcome life's challenges. However, his traditional knowledge of the art form guides him.

Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and starring Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, is India's official Oscar 2026 submission. Ishaan has really already begun advertising the film on a global scale. Dashavatar is anticipated to do the same in the near future.

When is the Oscars 2026?

Oscar 2026 is slated to be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The nominations for the Oscars will be announced on January 22, 2026. The award ceremony will air live on ABC.
