  • He was in Tihar Jail after surrendering in cheque bounce case
  • The case stems from a 2010 loan for his film Ata Pata Lapata

In a significant relief for Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, the Delhi High Court has granted him interim bail till March 18 in the long-running cheque bounce case. The actor, who had surrendered earlier this month and was in Tihar Jail, is now set to walk out of jail following the court’s order. The interim bail has been granted till March 18.

The development comes weeks after the High Court directed Rajpal Yadav to surrender in connection with the case. He complied with the order and surrendered before Tihar Jail on February 5.

The hearing on his interim bail plea had been ongoing, and the latest order now allows him temporary relief.

The case traces back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav reportedly took a loan to finance his directorial venture, Ata Pata Lapata. The film, released in 2012, failed at the box office, leading to financial strain. As repayment was delayed, the dues mounted significantly with interest. What began as a loan eventually escalated into multiple legal proceedings, with the outstanding amount reportedly swelling to nearly Rs 9 crore across seven cases.

In 2018, a magistrate court convicted the actor under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act and sentenced him to six months in jail. Following the conviction, Yadav approached higher courts, resulting in a prolonged legal battle. During this period, he is said to have made partial payments toward the dues. However, with appeals, adjournments, and accumulated interest, the liability continued to grow.

Earlier this year, the Delhi High Court directed the actor to surrender, leading to his recent incarceration. The interim bail now offers temporary respite as the matter continues to be heard.

Meanwhile, actor Sonu Sood had hinted at positive news ahead of the court’s decision. Sharing a note on X, Sood wrote, “Prayers have a great effect. We will soon give you good news.” He further added, “Because of your prayers and unwavering support, the wait is almost over. Time to get ready, the laughter you’ve been missing is about to return to the screen. Stay tuned.”

With the interim bail in place, Rajpal Yadav is expected to step out of jail shortly, bringing a temporary pause to a legal chapter that has spanned over a decade.
