After a decade-long run that redefined nostalgia-driven sci-fi storytelling, Stranger Things has officially come to an end. With the final episode of Season 5 now streaming on Netflix, fans across the globe are coming to terms with the emotional conclusion of the series that began in 2016. As reactions continue to pour in, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have finally opened up about the finale, Eleven’s shocking sacrifice, and the possibility of future stories set in the Stranger Things universe.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer Brothers reflected on the overwhelmingly positive response they’ve received from viewers since the finale aired. Ross Duffer shared how different fan reactions felt compared to traditional premieres. “We’re feeling really good. We’ve done premieres, but of course that’s not filled with just fans of the show. So to see them respond the way they did was such a great ending to the story for us,” he said.
One of the most talked-about moments from the finale is Eleven’s ultimate sacrifice to ensure her friends and Hawkins are finally safe. Addressing why the creators chose this ending, Matt Duffer explained the emotional weight behind the decision. “We came up with Eleven 10 years ago; we’ve been working with Millie for 10 years. So we’re very protective of her. It was really hard. I know we get hit for not killing more people, but Ross and I love these characters and these actors so much. It just felt like such a courageous and brave thing for her to do.”
Matt further elaborated on the deeper meaning behind Eleven’s choice, tying it to the trauma she and others endured as children. “She’s preventing what happened to her. What Hopper’s describing is all real, and it happened to her, and it happened to Kali. That’s why when Hopper’s giving that speech, you see how in pain she is and why Kali has become the way she’s become. Because of what she went through as a child. And Eleven wants to make sure that doesn’t happen to any other kid.”
Fans are divided over whether Eleven is truly gone. However, the Duffers intentionally chose not to provide a definitive answer. Matt explained, “The characters don’t know because they can’t know, and the audience can’t know because then it puts Eleven in danger, and her sacrifice was for nothing. So there’s a point in not knowing.” He added that many fans seem to share Mike Wheeler’s hopeful outlook, noting, “The boys obviously choose to believe… it seems like people are choosing to believe and are going the Mike Wheeler route.”
As for the future, the creators confirmed that Stranger Things may live on through a spinoff, though not a direct sequel. Matt was candid about his hesitation toward continuing the same story. “I mean, I guess a sequel could be about a midlife crisis. I don’t know how that would read as anything but a gross cash grab to me.” Still, he teased what’s to come, “I wish I could talk a little bit more about the spinoff, but I’m not allowed to yet. But Ross and I are really excited about exploring new characters and a new mythology but are still very much interested in telling a story in the spirit of Stranger Things.”

The iconic series starred Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Noah Schnapp, Joe Keery, and Sadie Sink. While the story of Eleven and her friends may have reached its conclusion, it seems the door to Hawkins is far from fully closed.
