‘Hello Bachhon,’ directed by Pratish Mehta, began streaming on Netflix on 6 March and stars Vineet Kumar Singh, Vikram Kochhar, Chitransh Raj, Anumeha Jain, and Girija Oak.

A warm story rooted in simplicity

‘Hello Bachhon’ is a warm and engaging series that looks into the life of Alakh Pandey, the founder of the edtech company Physics Wallah. The series works largely because it avoids loud characters, heavy confrontations, or a typical villain.

Instead, it unfolds like slices of real life where people struggle with problems and slowly move towards moments of hope and happiness. At its core, the series underlines a simple idea. Teaching is an art, and not everyone possesses the ability to become a great teacher.

It also suggests that if someone stays true to his values, success will eventually follow, even if it takes time. At first glance the series may look like a five episode promotional piece for the edtech company, especially because it avoids the controversies that surrounded Physics Wallah. Yet, if one sets that aside, the show still comes across as sincere and well-intentioned.

The rise of Physics Wallah

The story follows Alakh Pandey and the rise of Physics Wallah, which began on YouTube in 2016 and grew rapidly to become a unicorn. The narrative traces the company’s journey as it tries to expand its reach in the world of online education.

Alongside this journey are the stories of students whose hard work and determination help them secure admission to the prestigious IITs. The series begins at a point when Physics Wallah has already become a known name among students.

However, with a sudden rise in enrolments, the company begins to struggle with infrastructure and a shortage of teachers. The only solution is to look for investors who believe in the company’s vision. Alakh Pandey (Vineet Kumar Singh) and his co-founder Prateek Maheshwari (Vikram Kochhar) begin approaching several investors, hoping to convince them to support their dream. Most meetings end in rejection.

Some investors focus only on profits, while others demand majority control of the company. Alakh sees this as a compromise of the company’s purpose, but after several attempts, they eventually find someone willing to invest without changing their vision.

A series built on values and small victories

One of the strengths of ‘Hello Bachhon’ lies in its simplicity and the message it tries to convey. Alakh Pandey is portrayed as someone who never quite fits the image of a typical startup founder. At heart he remains a teacher, and the series highlights this aspect repeatedly.

The show also keeps conflicts low-key. There are moments when Pandey and Maheshwari disagree on important decisions, but instead of dramatic arguments, they resolve issues through conversations and discussions. This approach adds a sense of realism to the narrative. Another engaging aspect of the series is the inclusion of student stories across the five episodes.

These small yet moving segments add emotional weight to the show. The students come from very different backgrounds.

One story follows a student from a small village in Bihar, another from the crowded lanes of Dharavi, and yet another from a conservative family in Haryana. These journeys of struggle and aspiration give the series its emotional core.

Strong performances lead the story

The show is supported by strong performances from its cast. Vineet Kumar Singh, who plays Alakh Pandey, is highly convincing in the role. He captures the personality of a man who sees himself as a teacher before anything else.

His body language and dialect reflect the flavour of Prayagraj (Allahabad). Whether he is teaching students or interacting with his family, his moments feel natural and sincere.

Vikram Kochhar, who plays Prateek Maheshwari, provides steady support and brings warmth to the partnership that drives the company. His character also adds balance to the story and plays an important role in shaping the narrative. Girija Oak appears as Alakh’s sister and leaves an impression despite limited screen time.

The young actors who play the students also deliver believable performances and add authenticity to the series.

Inspiring yet selective in its storytelling

Despite its strengths, ‘Hello Bachhon’ does not feel like a fully rounded story. The series carefully avoids all the controversies that surfaced after Physics Wallah became a unicorn and chooses to present only the positive side of the journey.

Because of this, it sometimes feels incomplete. Yet if one looks at it as an inspirational drama rather than a complete account, the show works fairly well. The student stories in particular are deeply moving.

One of the most emotional moments comes when a student in Kota takes a desperate step and jumps in front of a speeding truck so he can qualify for admission through the disability quota. It is a disturbing yet powerful moment that stays with you. In the end, the series reminds viewers that success rarely comes easily and that perseverance often matters more than shortcuts.
