Netizens were left stunned on Tuesday after singer Arijit Singh’s verified Instagram account posted what looked like a sudden retirement note, saying he would no longer take up new work as a playback vocalist.

In the post, Arijit wrote, “Hello, Happy new year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that i am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.” The message triggered instant panic in the comments section, with many fans refusing to believe it and some wondering if the account had been compromised.

Within roughly an hour, the note had already racked up over 36K likes and thousands of comments, showing how quickly Arijit’s fanbase reacts to even a single line on his feed.

One user pleaded, “Omggggg whyyyy,” while another wrote, “I DON’T BELIEVE.” Several comments jumped straight to suspicion, with a follower asking, “Is this account hacked????” and another claiming, “Pakka I’d hack ho gya hai, kehdo ki ye jhoot hai.” The fear that the announcement might be real also spilled into dramatic appeals. “No you can’t do this to us,” read one comment, while another summed up the mood as “First heartbreak of 2026.”

Some reactions were blunt, even angry. “WORST POST SEEN EVER,” a user wrote, as another asked in disbelief, “Abey pagal ho gaya hai kya kya bol raha hai bhai ye?” Others tried to turn grief into a campaign, posting, “VOTE FOR JUSTICE FOR THE FANS.”

A longer message captured the emotional whiplash many felt. “Arreey but whyyyyyy ???????? You gone mad or what ??? Why are you doing this to us ??? Please don’t go man. We need you for atleast 20 more years,” the fan wrote. Another asked simply, “Aree par kyu???”

Amid the chaos, a few attempted to find clarity rather than outrage. One follower asked, “Sir will you be continuing to sing independently?” while another echoed a familiar Bollywood lyric, writing, “Andhera meraa tune le liya… tera ujala saara mere naam kiyaa.”

As of now, there has been no official clarification from Arijit Singh or his team on whether the post was intentional, misunderstood, or the result of a hack. Until that happens, fans seem stuck between denial and dread. For now, the internet waits, refreshing his page like it is news.
