Actor Neena Gupta has made candid remarks about her personal life, speaking about her marriage to chartered accountant Vivek Mehra, her relationship with former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards, and her experience of raising daughter Masaba Gupta as a single mother.
In a recent interview with journalist Shubhankar Mishra, Neena was asked whether she married for love. Responding directly, she said, “This is a very difficult question. I don’t understand love. I only understand the love I have for my child. I don’t understand anything else.”
She stated that her marriage was influenced more by circumstances than romance. Explaining her perspective, she said marriage, for her, was shaped by social realities. “Jarrurat thi, bahut. Agar humko samaj mein rehna hai toh samaj ki kuch niyamo ka palan karna padta hai,” she said.
Neena also addressed how society treats single women. She shared that being unmarried often led to discomfort in social situations. “Main kahi jati hoon toh mujhe ajeeb se drishti se dekha jata hai. Toh main comfortable feel nahi karti. Shaadi karlo sab theek ho jata hai. It’s a very sad thing but it’s true.”
Neena and Vivek Mehra met on a flight in the mid-2000s and later married in a private ceremony in the United States. The couple currently maintains a long-distance marriage, with Vivek based in Delhi and Neena working in Mumbai.
The actor also spoke about her daughter Masaba Gupta, whom she raised independently. Masaba is Neena’s daughter with Vivian Richards. Reflecting on her past relationship, Neena explained why marriage was never possible.
“Woh already shaadi shuda the, main shaadi kaise karti… Also, it wasn’t practical. Either I would have had to leave my job or he would have had to leave his career,” she said.
She added that Richards acknowledged their daughter. However, Neena said she took full responsibility for her decision to become a mother. “It was my decision to have a child. At that time, I was blind in love,” she admitted.
Neena also revealed that she once advised Masaba to marry early to avoid social struggles. She has since changed her stance. “Today’s generation thinks differently,” she said, adding that she has stopped giving advice on marriage and respects individual choices.
Neena’s relationship with Vivian Richards did not culminate in marriage due to practical constraints and existing commitments. She stated that either she would have had to leave her career or he would have had to leave his, which was not feasible at the time.
Her marriage to Vivek Mehra came later in life. The couple continues to live in different cities due to professional commitments.
