  • Her choice sparked debates on fashion, patriotism, and cultural representation.

Junaid Safdar, the son of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and the grandson of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, married Shanzay Ali Rohail, the granddaughter of prominent politician Sheikh Rohail Asghar, in a grand ceremony in Lahore.

For her mehndi ceremony, Shanzay Ali Rohail ditched Pakistani designers and wore a stunning emerald green lehenga by renowned Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, which took place at the Sharif family's Jati Umra home in Lahore.

The lehenga has forest green and rose-coloured dupattas, contrasting colour panels, a thick golden border, and Sabyasachi's trademark heritage-inspired embellishments.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar were among the dignitaries who attended the Nikah, which was held on Saturday at the Sharif family's Jati Umra home. The bride allegedly wore a red saree by Tarun Tahiliani, another well-known Indian designer, for the main wedding ceremony.

Shanzay Ali Rohail caused controversy with her designer choices for the wedding celebrations, while images of the ceremony went viral on social media. On Pakistani social media, her choice of Indian designers for a prominent political wedding sparked a contentious discussion.

Given her ties to Pakistan's well-known political family, many accused her of favouring Indian designers over Pakistani talent. Given the current atmosphere of patriotism and support for local talent, some questioned Shanzeh's choice of clothes, while others backed her right.

Some said the decision felt "mid" in comparison to local bridal couture and that Pakistani designers could have created something more symbolic of their culture.

Others argued that fashion should be universal and backed the bride's ability to make her own decisions. They brought up the fact that a lot of Indian brides and celebrities also wear clothing from Pakistani designers like Mohsin Naveed Ranjha and Faraz Manan.

However, this is not the first time that the family has encountered such criticism. Previously, Maryam Nawaz wore Sabyasachi to her nephew Zayd Hussain Nawaz Sharif's nikah in December 2024. She had also received backlash for her choice.
