Singer Shreya Ghoshal has weighed in on a topic that often sparks debate among music fans — lip-syncing during concerts.

Known for her ability to deliver powerful live performances without relying heavily on backing tracks, Shreya Ghoshal recently shared her candid thoughts on the practice, describing it as “lazy work” and stressing the importance of dedication to live singing.

Speaking on a podcast with entrepreneur and host Raj Shamani, Shreya Ghoshal was asked about singers who lip-sync on stage. While acknowledging that different performers approach live shows in their own way, she made it clear that she personally does not support the practice. “That’s just a lazy act. Apne mehanat nahi kari (You haven’t put in the hard work). In my personal opinion, it’s not a good approach,” she said.

Shreya Ghoshal went on to explain that she holds herself to strict personal standards when it comes to performing in public.

For her, a live show should reflect the effort an artist has invested in their craft. While she recognises that audiences may still enjoy performances delivered in different styles, she believes artists should feel responsible for the quality of what they present on stage.

She said, “I can’t discredit what the audience likes, but I have certain principles as an artist. I have a problem with any performance of mine being played publicly that I myself wouldn’t even be able to listen to. For me, that is extremely humiliating and insulting. An artist should feel uncomfortable if a song or live performance of theirs is being played around that has already failed. You’ll always think, ‘Why did I do that?’ Either you work hard on your craft because you’ve earned that crown or throne — don’t take it lightly thinking you’ve already achieved it. You have to work hard every single day.”

Her remarks come at a time when the subject has once again become a talking point online. Earlier this year, singer AP Dhillon faced criticism from viewers after appearing to lip-sync to his track With You during an episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show.

Shreya Ghoshal’s own journey in the music industry began early. At just 16, she made her playback debut in Devdas, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Her song Bairi Piya earned her the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer and marked the start of a highly successful career.

Over the years, Shreya Ghoshal has sung in several languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. Some of her well-known songs include Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai, Dheere Jalna, Yeh Ishq Hai and Pherari Mon.

Most recently, she lent her voice to Maatrubhumi from the upcoming film Battle of Galwan starring Salman Khan. Apart from playback singing, Shreya Ghoshal is currently hosting Indian Idol Season 16 alongside Badshah and Vishal Dadlani.

She has also announced her international concert tour, The Unstoppable Tour, which will take her to audiences in the UK, the United States, Abu Dhabi and several cities across India.
