Mohanlal and Sreenivasan’s much-loved Malayalam classic Udayananu Tharam is all set to return to the big screen in a newly restored 4K Dolby Atmos version. The 2005 film will re-release in theatres on February 6, more than twenty years after its original theatrical run, giving audiences a chance to experience the satire in enhanced visual and sound quality.
The re-release was officially announced by Mohanlal on Tuesday through a video message shared online. Encouraging audiences to revisit the film in cinemas, the actor described Udayananu Tharam as a special and deeply personal work. He also called it one of the finest screenplays written by the late Sreenivasan and urged families and fans to watch it again on the big screen.
Directed by Rosshan Andrrews and written by Sreenivasan, Udayananu Tharam was both a critical and commercial success upon its release in 2005. Over the years, the film has gained cult status for its sharp writing, memorable performances, and biting commentary on ambition and the inner workings of the film industry. Its dialogues and characters continue to enjoy strong recall among Malayalam cinema audiences.
The restored version has been presented in 4K Dolby Atmos using the latest restoration technology, promising a refreshed theatrical experience while preserving the film’s original essence. The upgrade is expected to enhance both the visual detailing and the sound design, offering viewers a richer cinematic presentation.
The story revolves around Udayabhanu (Mohanlal), an aspiring filmmaker whose dreams take a devastating turn when his screenplay is stolen by his close friend Rajappan Thengamoodu, played by Sreenivasan. Rajappan later reinvents himself as the flamboyant superstar Saroj Kumar, setting off a layered narrative that explores betrayal, fame, and the moral compromises tied to success.
The film boasts a strong ensemble cast including Meena, Jagathy Sreekumar, Mukesh, Salim Kumar, Cochin Haneefa, Janardhanan, Bhavana, Indrans, TP Madhavan, Anand, and AK Lohithadas. Their performances, combined with Sreenivasan’s nuanced writing, contributed significantly to the film’s enduring appeal.
Director Rosshan Andrrews also reshared Mohanlal’s announcement, reflecting on the film’s legacy and describing it as a tribute to the unseen struggles of aspiring filmmakers. With its 4K re-release, Udayananu Tharam is poised to connect once again with longtime fans while introducing a new generation to one of Malayalam cinema’s sharpest satires.
